Pwn2Own ends with Oracle Java, Reader and Adobe Flash exploits

Written By Unknown on Friday, 8 March 2013 | 09:33

Day two of the Pwn2Own competition at CanSecWest was again successful for French Vupen security, as they succeeded in exploiting Adobe Flash on Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7 by chaining together three zero-days (an overflow, a ASLR bypass technique and a IE9 sandbox memory corruption) and earning themselves another $70,000.

George Hotz exploited Adobe Reader XI (also on IE 9 on Win7), and Ben Murphy - the last contestant to target Java - has also managed to earn a prize even though he wasn't there, because James Forshaw, a winner from the previous day, agreed to serve as proxy and demonstrate the attack.

All in all, ZDI has awarded over half a million dollars in cash prizes and, of course, the compromised laptops and ZDI reward points.

The Google financed Pwnium hacking contest - also held at CanSecWest - this year requires contestants to "break" Chrome OS but has so far not witnessed a successful exploitation.

In the meantime, Mozilla has already fixed the use-after-free zero-day flaw exploited yesterday by Vupen Security, and Google has issued a Chrome update that fixes the flaws discovered by the MWR Labs team.

  • Wine Making It Possible to Run Windows Apps on Android Platform

Written By Unknown on Monday, 4 February 2013 | 07:30

The man behind Wine, the not-an-emulator which runs Windows applications on Linux, has been showing off an early version for those desperate to run MS Office on their Android device.

It was, according to Phoronix - who witnessed the demo - "horrendously slow", and running on a Mac which was itself running an Android emulator. Nevertheless, he added, the demonstration at the FOSDEM open source meeting in Brussels did show Windows applications running on an Android platform, which is technically impressive even if difficult to justify.

This is a step forward for Wine (originally an acronym for "Wine Is Not an Emulator") as it would extend its capability of running Windows applications on other operating systems. At the moment, it can load them on Linux, Mac OSX, & BSD. It achieves this by real-time translation of Windows API calls into POSIX calls.

Wine is funded largely by CodeWeavers, which makes money selling a supported version branded CrossOver, though Google has been known to send money Wine's way and other companies have been involved when getting their Windows applications ported to Linux.

The idea of Wine isn't to provide a Windows desktop, but to support the single killer application which is keeping someone from switching... of course, the problem is that everyone has a different reason not to switch. If Android proves popular on tablets then Windows apps could be similarly sticky, and CodeWeavers could make money selling CrossOver for Android.

But that's for the future. What we have now is a very flaky demo which proves it can be done. While CodeWeavers sponsors some staff, the majority of Wine is the usual open-source mix of hobbyists and fanatics (sign up here), so future development will depend on that community, as well as the commercial potential of running Windows apps on Android devices.

    Windows Clipboard

     View Clipboard History in Windows

Live Clipboard logo. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

In this post you will find a few such alternative clipboard managers for Windows using which it would be possible to save and retrieve every piece of information that was copied to the clipboard. Here’s a quick list:

    How to Retrieve Clipboard History

    1. Clipdiary
a powerful clipboard manager which will store every piece of information that was copied to the clipboard including text, images or any other file. Clipdiary automatically loads upon Windows startup and maintains a database to store the history of all copied items.

    2. ClipMagic
ClipMagic is similar to Clipdiary but includes a  extra features. The following are some of the extra features
    • Categorize/organize your clips. You can also create filters/rules for your incoming clips
    • You can store/categorize your ideas to research fast
    • Assign often used text like email signatures to hotkeys

    3. Ditto

It keeps track of all the copied items such as text, images and other files so that you can retrieve them whenever necessary. The following are some of the highlights of Ditto:
    • Assign hotkeys
    • Search and organize the clippings
    • Supports unicode
    • Get a preview of all the copied items
    • Ditto comes as a freeware
Even though Ditto is a freeware, it is still comparable to the two shareware tools discussed earlier. So in my opinion Ditto is always the first choice.

    Steganography

Hide Data in Image, Audio & Video Files: Steganography

Cryptographically secure pseudorandom number g...Cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generator (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

In this post I will take you through a concept called steganography using which, it is possible to hide your secret information in image files, songs or any other file of your choice.

There are many steganography tools available online but only a few are able to work flawlessly.. However I have  managed to get a tool that can work perfectly on all types of files and all size of data. The tool is called “Stego Magic“. You can download it from the following link.
    Download Stego Magic
The zip file contains two versions of Stego Magic: One for encrypting the text messages and the other for encrypting binary filesStegoMagic_TXT can be used to hide text messages in other files such as an image or a sound file. StegoMagic_BIN can be used to hide one binary file in another such as an executable file inside an image or an image inside a video file.
With Stego Magic, there is no limitation on the size and type of the file that you are intending to hide.
At the end of the encryption process, a secret decryption key will be generated and the same is required during the decryption process.

    How to Use ?

Suppose you want to hide a text message inside a JPG file:
    1. Place the JPG and the text file (.txt) in the same folder as that of StegoMagic_TXT.exe
    2. Run StegoMagic_TXT.exe and follow the screen instructions to embed the text message inside the JPG image.
    3. Note down the secret decryption key.
Now you can send this image to your friend via email. To decrypt the hidden message, your friend should load this JPG file onto the Stego Magic tool and use the secret decryption key.

    Remote PC Control

    Remote PC Control

Control Windows  with Email or SMS

    Windows Remote

    Remote Control Windows

TweetmyPCThere’s no magic here, it’s the power of TweetMyPC utility that lets you remote control your computer from a mobile phone or any other Internet connected computer.

he initial version of TweetMyPC was limited to basic shutdown and restart commands, however the current v2 has a far more robust set of commands, enabling a far more useful way of getting your PC to carry out certain tasks especially when you’re AFK(Away From Keyboard).

Let’s get started. Install the TweetMyPC utility of your computer and associate your Twitter and Gmail account with the application. It will use Twitter to receive remote commands (like shutdown, log-off, lock workstation, etc) from while the email account will be used for send your information (e.g., what process are currently running on your computer).

Send Commands to the Remote Computer:

By Email: Associate your Twitter account with Posterous (auto-post) and all email messages sent to twitter@posterous.com will therefore become commands for the remote computer. (Also see: Post to Twitter via Email)
By SMS: If you live in US, UK, Canada, India, Germany, Sweden or New Zeleand, you can send associate Twitter with your mobile phone (see list of numbers) and then control your remote computer via SMS Text Messages.
By IM: Add the Twitter bot – twitter@twitter.com – to your list of Google Talk buddies and you can then send commands via instant message.
By Web:If you are on vacation but have access to an internet connected laptop, just log into the Twitter website and issue commands (e.g., shutdown or logoff) just as another tweet.
    lock computer shutdown

Download Files, Capture Remote Screenshots & more..

Here’s a partial list of commands that you can use to remote control the PC – they’re case-insensitive and, as discussed above, you can send them to Twitter via email, SMS, IM or the web.
Screenshot : This is one of the most useful command I’ve come across after the shutdown command. Want to know what’s happening within the confines of your PC when you’re not around? Just tweet screenshot and TweetMyPC will take a screenshot of your desktop and post it to the web (see example).
ShutDown, LogOff, Reboot, Lock : The function of these useful commands is pretty obvious from their names.
Standby, Hibernate : Don’t want to shutdown the remote PC? Save power by entering standby mode with this command. Or hibernate your PC with a tweet, thereby saving even more power.

twitter whaleDownload <url> : You can download any file from the Internet on to the remote computer using the download command. For instance, a command like downloadhttp://bit.ly/tCJ9Y will download the CIA Handbook so you have the document ready when you resume work the next day.
gmail whaleGetFile <filepath> : The Download command was for downloading files from the Internet onto the remote computer. However, if you like to transfer a file from the remote computer to your current computer, use the GetFile command. It takes the full page of the file that you want to download and will send that you as an email attachment. If you don’t know the file page, use the command GetFileList <drivename> to get a list of file folders on that drive.
GetProcessList : This is like a remote task manager. You’ll get a list of programs that are currently running on the remote computer along with their process IDs. Send another command kill <process id> to terminate any program that you think is suspicious or not required
